Giving blood to kick off the holidays

November 29, 2017

Every two seconds someone in the USA needs blood. A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood. The blood used in an emergency is already on the shelves before the event occurs. Blood cannot be manufactured in a lab–it can only come from donors. That is why blood donation is so important, and that is why, this Black Friday, Bar Harbor Savings and Loan sponsored a blood drive.

This event was held at Atlantic Oceanside Conference Center in partnership with the American Red Cross. In addition to juice and cookies and the joy of giving, each donor received a “mini physical” to check their temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and hemoglobin. If you missed the BHSL blood drive, it’s never too late to give blood. The next Red Cross blood drives coming up in our area will be:

• Saturday, December 16, 10am-3pm at the Blue Hill Consolidated School in Blue Hill (60 High Street)

• Wednesday, December 27, 9am-2pm at the MDI YWCA in Bar Harbor (36 Mount Desert Street)

• Tuesday, January 9, 12-5pm at the American Legion in Southwest Harbor (21 Hassan Avenue)

• Wednesday, January 10, 10am-3pm at VFW Post 109 in Ellsworth (419 Main Street)
